Roland's Wood

Nestled in the heart of Northland, a sanctuary of tranquility, history, and natural beauty

ABOUT Roland Sansom

and The Friends of Roland's Wood Charitable Trust

Born out of love

With good old farmer attitude and love of the land

Roland's Wood is the vision of Roland Sansom, who aspired to create a unique deciduous woodland on his Inlet Rd property. In 1987, after retiring from farming, he began planting a variety of English trees alongside daffodils and bluebells, despite having no formal horticultural training. Although he passed away in 2001 before his trees reached maturity, he bequeathed 4Ha of this woodland to the people (and the dogs!) of Kerikeri, ensuring it would be maintained as a public space.

The birth of the charitable trust

Friends of Roland's Wood Charitable Trust

Roland's Wood Trust

In 2007 the Roland’s Wood Trust was formed for the provision and maintenance of a woodland public park for recreational use, enjoyment and benefit of the public. The 4ha of woodlands and a small trust fund was gifted to the FNDC with them appointed as sole trustee.

Following Roland’s death however, the woods fell into neglect, overrun by invasive weeds.

Rotary and FORW

In 2009, the Kerikeri Rotary Club, with volunteers known as the Friends of Roland’s Wood (FORW) led by John Horrell and John Graham, undertook restoration efforts after years of neglect. In 2013 both John’s were awarded the honours of NZ Gardener of the Year, and John Horrell was also honoured with a 2013 FNDC Citizens Award.

FORWCT

Informal access to adjacent land owned by Roland’s sister, Lavender Sansom, allowed maintenance until her land was put up for sale, prompting the formation of the Friends of Roland’s Wood Charitable Trust (FORWCT) in 2016 to purchase the land further expanding the park to 8ha. At the same time, the intention was to legally transfer the maintenance of the existing woodland from FNDC to the FORWCT via a Trust Deed, and this was finally achieved in 2020.

Recent History

Recent History

Lavenders Land

Purchased on borrowed money with the debt paid for by the subdivision, development and sale of 4 residential sites which include a private access off Heron Hill that gives access to the park for maintenance. This 4.3ha of land owned by FORWCT adjacent to the woodland park is slowly being restored to a mix of native planting and open grass areas as a contrast to the woodland area.

Today and Tomorrow

Today, Roland's Wood thrives as a cherished asset for the community, showcasing a diverse range of trees and plants that offer beautiful vistas and a unique ecological experience, reflecting Roland's original dream of a tranquil, informal woodland space. The Trust now works as the wood’s Kaitiaki (guardians), to develop, maintain and improve this unique treasure.

Whats next?

As the trust continues to fulfil the wishes of Roland and to continue the work that he started, there are many different projects and fun activities that are in the pipeline.

With the help of the community, volunteers, and private donations, Roland's Wood will continue to be a special place for the people of Northland and their furry family members.

Are the woods Dog Friendly?

Yes, the entirety of the woods is dog friendly. The woods are one of only 4 places in Northland that are an off-lead year round. It is also by far the biggest area of its type.

What can we do if a dog is misbehaving?

While we love dogs, sometimes they can get a bit much. If you have concerns about any dogs (or owners), the best thing to do is to contact the FNDC (Far North District Council) animal control team 0800 920 029.

We will always want to hear about your experiences, good or bad, but there is only a limited amount that we can do.

Is there parking?

There are two parking areas, the first and most preferred is along Kerikeri Inlet Road and is considered the "Main Entrance" to the woods.

The second parking area is at the end of Heron Hill and is the closest entrance to Lavenders Land. Please note that there are private residences by this parking area so please be mindful of our lovely neighbours.
